Shapes: Fun with Yarn

Preschool Yarn Shape Lesson

There is officially a little less than 3 weeks left of school before Summer break. I can’t believe that the time has flown by so fast. This week we worked on shapes and understanding their attributes e.g. a square has 4 sides, a circle does not have sides like a square etc. This is a simple activity that you can at home, in the car, waiting room etc. All you need is some yarn. I gave each child a yarn that was tied up. We first made a circle with our yarn and talked about how a circle is round and does not have straight sides. Then I made a square and had them identify it and tell me how they know it is a square. Then it was their turn to make a square. After we did several shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, diamond), I had them have a turn making a shape and having their friends tell us what it is and how they know. For my non-verbal students, I would make two shapes and have them point to the shape I ask, and let them make a shape with their yarn. It was a fun and simple activity that we all enjoyed.
