What Children Need to Learn to Read – the complete parent’s guide to ensuring literacy, a love of reading, and school readiness by Michelle Vallene is a book dedicated to help parents of young children explore the world of reading. The book focuses on language development from birth through the early grades. It has a handy checklist for parents for the different age groups, as well as a children’s checklist for parents to see where they’re child may be at. The book is simple to read and has tons of ideas, songs and rhymes for you to use. I loved all the ideas and activities to use with my preschoolers. Since I teach students of so many different ability levels, I really liked that I could flip around the book and find activities and ideas for each child I have in my class that fits their developmental level. Parents also need to remember that every child is different and may develop differently, so make sure to find where your child is at so as not to frustrate them or bore them. My students loved the music CD that came with the book. We had fun singing along to the songs. Overall, this is a great resource to have and is going to be a part of my collection of resources.
