Children with Autism

As a preschool special education teacher, I work with many students with autism of all ranges. No two children with autism are the same and while they may share some similar traits they are as unique as any other child. Recently someone shared this video with me about a girl with autism who found a way to express herself through typing. I have great expectations for all my students but I also do not like giving their parents false hope. I always explain to them that they cannot compare their child to another. Autism is a spectrum disorder, so children with autism can range from very mild to very severe. What we want to do is help them reach their potential. However, I was blown away by this girl and what she has written. It gives us a glimpse into what someone with autism may be feeling and it reaffirmed my believe that giving each child with autism the ability to communicate through any form appropriate for them is crucial to their well being.
